On this holiday we visit three of NSW outback stations spending 2 nights on each, we learn the history of their properties that have been past on through the generations. Join in with their every day life and tour the properties. The Outback is one of those rare experiences that taps into the very essence of the Australian heritage. Luggage:  Luggage to be packed in a soft sports bag or similar (no wheels or hard-sided bags allowed) A small backpack for inside the vehicle is recommended as this is to be stored under your seat when the vehicle is moving. Luggage to weigh no more than 17 kg backpack 5 kg.


Day 1. Central Coast—Gilgandra (D)

Our adventure begins today as we make our way through the Upper Hunter, Passing through Denman to Merriwa to view the towns silo art and take time for lunch (own expense). Continue along the Golden Highway to Dunedoo before joining the Castlereagh Highway to Gilgandra for our overnight accommodation.

Stay: Cooee Motel or similar

Day 2. Gilgandra—Bourke (BLD)

Departing 8.30 AM we continue along the Castlereagh Hwy we visit the town of Gulargambone to view the water tower painted by Jenny McCracken then onto Coonamble, for morning tea and view the water tower painted by John Murray and Sooty Welsh. The rural town Walgett were two rivers meet, the Barwon and the Namoi. We will enjoy a picnic lunch here in Walgett. This afternoon we will be travelling along the Kamilaroi Hwy to Brewarrina and then into Bourke for a two night stay.

Day 3. Gundabooka N.P (BLD)

Today we explore Gundabooka National Park. The 63,903ha national park extends from the Darling river banks to the Gunderbooka range. Vast stretches of grassy woodlands, open plains and rust coloured rock dominate the landscape. Enjoy lunch at Bennetts Gorge picnic area and for those more adventurous, take a walk into the Valley of the Eagles to view the imposing Mount Gunderbooka, which rises 500m above the park. Returning to our accommodation and prepare for tonight. You haven’t experienced Bourke until you’ve relaxed beneath a Coolabah Tree under the starlit sky, with a campfire of Gidgee coals, whilst sharing a scrumptious meal and experience some exceptional Australian poetry, local stories & music.

Day 4. Bourke—Trilby Station (BD)

This morning we take in the sights of Bourke, view the historic buildings in the town, visit Fred Hollow’s Vision Way, Poets Corner, the Historic Cemetery plus the Nancy Bird Air Terminal. Lunch in Bourke (own expense) before we make our way to the small township of Louth before a short distance to Trilby Station. Meet our hosts, Liz and Gary on their 320,000 acre station with 17,000 Merino sheep. Two night stay in their new Shearers bunkhouse.

Day 5. Trilby Station (BLD)

Liz and Gary have lived at Trilby since their marriage in 1981. Gary is a 5th generation Murray who settled here on the Darling River in 1860, when you could buy 60 acres for 60 pounds sterling anywhere in NSW. This morning we join Liz on a short and slow walking tour. Liz will give us a little history on Trilby and share some stories of life on an outback station, walk through the homestead garden and visit the new shearing shed. After lunch we grab a mud map from Liz and take a drive around this historic station.

Day 6. Trilby Station - Eldee Station (BD)

We farewell Liz & Gary and make our way past Tilpa to Wilcannia. Joining the Barrier highway into Broken Hill. A short drive out of Broken Hill is the historic town of Silverton and a short distance from here is Eldee Station. A working sheep and cattle station in the Mundi Mundi Plains/Barrier Ranges region of Outback NSW. We will be hosted by 4th generation farmers and passionate environmental advocates, Naomi & Stephen Schmidt, this historic property features some of the most spectacular landscapes in Australia.  Settle in for our two night stay and watch the sunset over the Mundi Mundi Plains.

Day 7. Eldee Station tour (BLD)

Awake to the sounds of the outback, enjoy a relaxing breakfast before we enjoy a drive around the station, learn about how the station operates, the ancient geology of the Barrier Ranges and the iconic Mundi Mundi Plains. Time to relax this afternoon take a dip in the plunge pool or enjoy a heated spa.

Day 8 Eldee Station—Broken Hill (BD)

We say goodbye to Eldee Station and take the short drive into Broken Hill. Our first stop will be the Silver City Mint and Art Centre, home of the Big Picture. Local artist Peter Anderson (Ando) had a vision to paint 100,000 saltbush, 20,000 trees, 20,000 small stones, 1000 large stones, 3000 clouds, 1500 hills and the 12 sculptures which comprise ‘The Big Picture’, the World’s Largest Acrylic Painting on Canvas by a single artist. Next stop is the Line of Load Miners Memorial on top of the hill which also gives a great view over the town. After lunch we visit the Royal Flying Doctor Base which combines a museum, theatre and interactive displays showing the history of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. We then check into our motel for a two night stay.

Day 9. Broken Hill—Menindee (BLD)

Today we venture out to the small town of Menindee, the oldest European settlement on the Darling River and was an important port during the mid-19th century.  We board the River Lady for a relaxing and informative cruise on the Darling and Menindee Lake system. (providing water level is OK) Enjoy lunch at the Maidens Hotel before we return to Broken Hill.

Day 10. Broken Hill—Lake Paika Station (BD)

Travel the Silver City Hwy this morning to the town of Wentworth were the Murray & Darling Rivers meet. From here its onto Mildura before joining the Sturt Highway to Balranald. Just out of Balranald is Lake Paika Station one of the districts most historic stations, the property is dotted with relics and old buildings and is a wonderful historical treasure trove of past days on the station. We step back in time and enjoy a 2 night stay at Lake Paika Station with our hosts Dianne & Iain Accommodation in the restored original Workman’s Quarters, situated on a peninsula of the 445 hectare Lake Paika.

Day 11. Lake Paika (BLD)

Nestled on a peninsula of Lake Paika. This 450ha natural wetland, recently reinstated after more than 100 years of being “stranded” from its Murrumbidgee “lifeline” is quickly responding. Improved biodiversity of wildlife & vegetation regeneration has already occurred in response to watering.
Lake Paika Station is a bird watcher’s and photographer’s paradise, with over 20,000 waterbirds of more than 35 species having been observed.

Day 12. Lake Paika - Wagga Wagga (BD)

This morning we join the Sturt Highway travelling along the vast Hay Plains. Our destination today is Wagga Wagga for overnight.

Day 13. Wagga Wagga—Home (B)

Homeward bound today stopping for morning tea and lunch before arriving back to Kariong to join your transfer vehicle back to your home.
