Gibb River Road Kimberley Discovery

Discover the real Kimberley along the Gibb River Road with its spectacular scenery and many gorges provides an outback experience like no other. The road spans 660kms from Kununurra to Derby.

We travel through a spectacular landscape of intensely coloured ranges, dramatic gorges and lush rock pools and waterfalls, everything the Kimberley is famous for.
Our holiday begins in Kununurra, taking in Lake Argyle and the Ord River, then onto Wyndam before joining the” Gibb” with two night stays at Home Valley Station, Drysdale River Station and Mt Elizabeth Station before a night at the incredible Bells Gorge Wilderness Camp.

We will Cruise Chamberlain Gorge and Geikie Gorge, Visit Windjana Gorge, Manning Gorge and many other spectacular gorges along the way. Travel through the King Leopold Ranges and visit the town of Derby for your chance to take a seaplane flight to the Horizontal Falls. Finishing this amazing holiday in Broome.

Luggage: Luggage to be packed in a soft sports bag or similar (no wheels or hard-sided bags allowed) A small backpack for inside the vehicle is recommended as this is to be stored under your seat when the vehicle is moving. Luggage to weigh no more than 17 kg backpack 5 kg.


Day 1. Central Coast—Kununurra (D)

Welcome to Kununurra, you will be met at Kununurra Airport by your Echidna Travel guide who will transfer you to your accommodation for the next 3 nights.

Day 2. Lake Argyle—Ord River Cruise (BLD)

This morning we travel the short distance to Lake Argyle and enjoy a visit to Argyle Downs Homestead along the way. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the banks of the Ord River before joining our Triple J Cruise for a relaxing afternoon sunset cruise back into Kununurra. A perfect start to your holiday.

Day 3. Kununurra sights (BD)

Kununurra is the largest town in Western Australia north of Broome, with the closest town being Wyndham. Today we take in the sights including the amazing irrigation area, Kelly’s Knob Lookout, Ivanhoe Crossing and the Diversion Dam, just to name of few.

Day 4. Kununurra—Wyndham (BD)

Wyndham is the historic town of the region and was settled in the mid 1800’s to service the Halls Creek gold fields and the outlying cattle stations. Five Rivers Lookout provides a spectacular backdrop to Wyndham the ‘top town in the North’. From here you can identify the five rivers that flow into the Cambridge Gulf: the King, Ord, Durack, Forrest and Pentecost Rivers. Explore the town and you cannot miss the giant crocodile statue and the Aboriginal Dreamtime Statues. We then make our way to Parry Creek Farm our home for tonight. Parry Creek Farm cabins Situated in the Parry Lagoon Nature Reserve surrounded by the famous Ramsar Wetlands.

Day 5. Home Valley Station (BLD)

The Gibb River Road was originally used as the main thoroughfare for transporting cattle between Derby and Wyndham in the 1960’s. Now, it’s one of Australia’s most iconic 4WD tracks. Our first stop will be El Questro Station, here we enjoy a 1.5 hour cruise along Chamberlain Gorge. Returning to the Station in time for lunch before crossing the Pentecost River to our home for the next two nights Home Valley Station

Day 6. Tour the Station (BLD)

The Kimberley region has a wondrous history, from its Indigenous heritage to the European explorers who lay the foundations for a thriving pastoral industry. The Home Valley Station tour is a great way to learn about the surrounding area and take in the stunning natural beauty of the area. As you tour around the Station grounds our guide tells us the history as a working cattle station, before heading out on the iconic Gibb River Road, and down to the local Bindoola Falls, for a dip in the refreshing waterhole. This afternoon we make our way out to the Cockburn Range for sunset drinks and nibbles.

Day 7. Home Valley—Drysdale River Station (BLD)

Continue along the Gibb River Road past the abandoned Durack River Station and take a visit to Ellenbrae Station. Enjoy the gardens and view the rustic Kimberley homestead whilst enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and delicious Gibb River Road famous scones! We then branch of the Gibb River Road onto the Kalumburu Road and make our way to Drysdale River Station for a two night stay.

Day 8. Optional flights (BLD)

Drysdale River Station is the gateway to the Mitchell Falls. Optional Flights are available (own expense from $480.00 pp) over the Prince Regent Coast and the majestic Mitchell Falls. This afternoon we explore the and view the amazing Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) rock art at the King Edward River.

Day 9. Drysdale River - Mt Elizabeth Station (BLD)

Flights available this morning before we depart Drysdale River Station. Just a short distance away is Mt Elizabeth Station, a half-million acre, fully operational cattle station and our home for the next two nights.

Day 10. Wunnamurra Gorge (BLD)

Wunnamurra gorge boasts the beauty and tranquillity the Kimberley is renowned for. White sandy beaches, deep cool refreshing swimming water and ancient Aboriginal rock art are among the highlights of today’s adventure on Mt Elizabeth.

Day 11. Mt Elizabeth Station - Bells Gorge Wilderness Camp (BLD)

Have your cameras charged as to day is a day of incredible beauty as we explore the gorges. We will visit Galvans Gorge, Manning Gorge and Adcock Gorge before arriving at Bells Gorge Wilderness Lodge.

Day 12. Bells Gorge—Windjana Gorge—Fitzroy Crossing (BLD)

We depart the luxury of Bells Gorge to day and travel through the King Leopold Range and visit Lennard River Gorge. We now turn off the Gibb River Road and Make our way to Windjana Gorge. As you walk through the gorge your will see the Fresh Water Crocodiles basking in the sun, you will be amazed at how many you will see. Windjana Gorge is a 3.5 km gorge, carved out of the Napier Range by the Lennard River. Our destination today is Fitzroy Crossing for the night.

Day 13. Geikie Gorge Cruise - Derby (BD)

This morning we cruise the iconic Danggu Geikie Gorge, carved by the mighty Fitzroy River in the Kimberley region, gives a fascinating insight into the gorge’s wildlife and geology. You can see crocodiles, wallabies, and birds such as sea eagles, brolgas and rare purple-crowned fairy-wrens, against the backdrop of contrasting colours of the gorge walls. After our cruise we join the Great Northern Highway and travel into Derby. View the giant Boab Prison Tree, Myalls Bore and Cattle Trough along the way.

Day 14. Derby (BLD)

Derby’s claim to fame is having the highest tides of any Australian port. 11 m (or 36 feet) of tidal difference means there is an enormous amount of water rushing in and out every 6 hours. Today we take time to visit some of the local highlights including the famous Derby Jetty Wharf.

Optional Tour: Today you the amazing opportunity to hop on board a sea plane and fly over the Buccaneer Archipelago, a group of 800 to 1000 of some of the most remote islands in the world. This is also where the Horizontal Waterfalls are located. Your seaplane will land at a pontoon and you transfer to a jet boat to go through the falls. You then enjoy lunch before your flight back to Derby. Highly recommended full day tour.

Day 15. Derby—Broome (BD)

Our adventure along the Gibb River Road has ended and we travel just two hours to the cosmopolitan town of Broome. This afternoon we explore some of the scenic sights including Cable Beach, Chinatown, Streeters Jetty, Town Beach Japanese Cemetery, Dinosaur footprints, and Anastasia’s Pool

Day 16. Broome (B)

This weekend is Broome Cup weekend if you are interested in horse racing. We explore more of the town and sights today followed by sunset at Cable Beach. Dinner own expense.

Day 17. Broome Free Day (BD)

Today has been set aside for you to enjoy your own time. You may like to take an optional tour or just relax by the pool. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner for those departing the tour tomorrow.

Or Broome to Eighty Mile Beach.
We say farewell to those departing the tour today and making their flight home. We hope you enjoyed your Kimberley Discovery holiday with us.
