Adventure awaits on the dusty tracks of the Flinders and Gammon Ranges amid breathtaking scenery. This is a must-see part of Australia! Divided into three distinct regions; the Southern Flinders Ranges, the Central Flinders (i.e. Flinders Ranges National Park) and the Northern Flinders, which leads into the spectacular Gammon Ranges. With famous red mountains, towering river red gum trees, rugged landscapes and an abundance of indigenous wildlife. Explore Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheatre located in a huge crater surrounded by mountains. A trip to the Flinders and surrounding Arkaroola in the Gammon Ranges is an experience you’ll never forget. It’s an adventure that will give you an appetite for more of this dry but beautiful environment, offering sunshine, an abundance of indigenous wildlife, rocky gorges, salt lakes, wide open plains and rugged mountains. All of which make this ancient land unique.

Luggage: Luggage to be packed in a soft sports bag or similar (no wheels or hard-sided bags allowed) A small backpack for inside the vehicle is recommended as this is to be stored under your seat when the vehicle is moving. Luggage to weigh no more than 17 kg backpack 5 kg.

– Comfortable casual clothing, cotton is best (no need to dress for dinner)

FLINDERS & GAMMON RANGES ITINERARY

DAY 1. Gosford - Narrandera (LD)

Departing the Central Coast this morning we make our way to Narrandera for overnight. Travelling to historic Goulburn for lunch before continuing through Wagga Wagga to Narrandera on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River and the heart of the NSW Riverina.

STAY: Newell Motor Inn

DAY 2. Nerrandera - Mildura (BLD)

This morning we travel the Mid Western Highway to Hay also on the banks of the Murrumbidgee. We will visit the Australian Shearer’s Hall of Fame for a guided tour. Continue along the Sturt Highway to Balranald. Lunch will be prepared for us at the Balranald Ex-Services Club. This afternoon we have a short drive to Mildura for overnight.

DAY 3. Mildura - Burra (BD)

Crossing into South Australia we follow the Murray River to the quiet township of Morgan, once one of the busiest river ports in the State. From Morgan we make our way to Burra, a well-preserved mining town nestled in the Bald Hill Ranges. This afternoon a local guide will take us on a heritage tour, visit the Miners’ dugouts, where the Cornish miners made their homes. View the open cut mine and Paxton Square cottages.

DAY 4. Burra - Wilpena Pound Resort (BLD)

Our travel today takes us through Jamestown and Wilmington to the once railway town of Quorn. Travel past deserted ruins as the beauty of the Flinders Ranges surrounds us. Enter the Flinders Ranges National Park to arrive at the Wilpena Pound Resort our home for 2 nights. Adjacent to the resort is the Wilpena information centre and a visit is highly recommended.

DAY 5. Flinders Ranges National Park - Wilpena Pound (BLD)

Wilpena Pound, is one of the most extraordinary geological formations in Australia and is only accessible by foot, the walk in is long. Please ensure you carry water and wear comfortable walking shoes. Plenty of time is set aside for you to walk into the Pound. The only way to really appreciate the beauty of Wilpena Pound is to take a scenic flight (own expense) from $165.00 per person. Please advise at time of booking if you wish to take one of the flights.

DAY 6. Wilpena Pound - Arkaroola (BLD)

Spend the day exploring further north, pausing at Stokes Hill Lookout and the Great Wall of China, touring the small settlement of Blinman and marvelling at the red walls of Parachilna Gorge. Camera’s at the ready today as we travel through picturesque gorges and rolling plains, discover the natural beauty of the rock shapes, twisted trees, caves and the magnificent river red gums that make the Flinders Ranges so unique. Our destination is Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in the beautiful Gammon Ranges. This area is rich with fascinating geological formations and the mountains sparkle with exposed quartz, fluorspar, hematites, and ochre. A gem hunters paradise.

DAY 7. Ridge Top Tour (BLD)

Arkaroola’s signature 4WD tour ‐ an unforgettable encounter with the timeless terrain and unique natural beauty of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. Travelling in a specially constructed open‐top 4WD vehicle, we are taken on a guided tour of some of the most spectacularly rugged country on earth. Our trained tour guide will share the knowledge of Arkaroola’s 1600‐million year geological history as they navigate the steep slopes and hair-raising ascents of the famous Ridgetop Track. Inspiring images of red granite mountains and golden spinifex covered hillsides give way to a breath‐taking view across the Freeling Heights, Lake Frome.

DAY 8. Arkaroola - Hawker - Broken Hill (BLD)

An even more spectacular scenery of the Gammon Ranges and North Flinders Ranges we traverse vast sheep and cattle stations, through the more undulating countryside. Next, we will visit the small settlement of Parachilna before arriving in the township of Hawker and our two nights overnight accommodation.

DAY 9. Mystery Hawker Tour (BLD)

Today we explore an area not on the regular tourist route, with our host on board from the motel he will show us the hidden secrets of the area. This afternoon we visit the Jeff Morgan Gallery and Wilpena Panorama. I must see when visiting Hawker.

DAY 10. Hawker - Broken Hill (BLD)

Departing Hawker we travel via Orroroo to the historic rail town of Peterborough for morning tea before joining the Barrier Highway which will take us across the border back into NSW to the birthplace of BHP, Broken Hill. Before checking into our motel we will take a city tour to see a little of the workings of Broken Hill.

DAY 11. Broken Hill - Nyngan (BLD)

Our journey continues along the Barrier Highway today passing through Wilcannia, once a major port in the days of the paddlewheeler. Cobar will be our next stop before arriving in Nyngan for overnight.

DAY 12. Nyngan - Gosford (B)

Homeward bound today via Dubbo, Dunnedoo, Merriwa, and the Upper Hunter Valley. Central Coast & Newcastle passengers will be returned to your home.
